Softball Records A Loss and Tie in Doubleheader At Boston University

Grifone recorded a solo home run in game two.

BOSTON, Mass.- The Providence College softball team recorded a loss and tie against the Boston University Terriers (41-1-1, 12-0 Patriot League) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 23 in Boston, Mass. The Friars fell 8-0 in six innings in game one and tied 1-1 in game two against the Terriers. The Friars moved to 18-20-1 overall (8-10 BIG EAST). Senior and co-captain Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) excelled both in the circle and at the plate in game two. Grifone delivered a solo home run and struck out seven batters to help carry the Friars to a 1-1 tie.  

 GAME ONE NOTES

-The Terriers took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

-BU recorded a run in the third and fifth innings and two runs in the bottom of the sixth to clinch an 8-0 win and finish the game in six innings.

-Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) and Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) split time in the circle for the Friars pitching 3.0 and  2.2 innings, respectively. The two pitchers combined for five strikeouts while conceding nine hits and seven earned runs.

GAME TWO NOTES

-Boston University opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second.

-In the top of the fifth, Grifone hammered a solo home run to put the Friars on the board and tie the score at 1-1.

-The two teams were unable to find the answer over the remaining innings and the game finished with a score of 1-1.

-Grifone and Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) shared time on the circle for Providence. Grifone pitched six innings as she recorded seven strikeouts and surrendered three hits while holding the Terriers to just one run. Walter pitched the final inning, posting one strikeout while shutting out the Terriers in hits and runs.

The Friars will host BIG EAST foe, Georgetown (12-27, 3-15 BIG EAST) in a three-game series on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. beginning on Friday, April 26.
