Softball Picks Up Non-Conference Win Over Merrimack, 7-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team defeated the Merrimack Warriors (16-25, 10-5 NEC) in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, April 17 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 18-18 overall (8-10 BIG EAST). Senior Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) spearheaded the Friars' attack as she went 3-for-4 at the plate, contributing three RBI including a two-run home run. Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.) hit her first career home run with a two-run shot that helped seal the 7-2 win for the Friars. Junior Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts.

GAME NOTES

-The Warriors gained an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first.

-The Friars countered in their half of the inning with three runs highlighted by an RBI double by Harrington to give the Friars a 3-2 lead.

-Harrington followed with a two-run home run in the bottom of second to extend the Providence lead to 5-2.

-In the bottom of the fifth, De La Fuente hammered her first career home run with a two-run shot that helped the Friars to a 7-2 lead over the Warriors.

-The Friars were able to fend off Merrimack over the remaining innings to finish on top, 7-2.

-Junior Jessica Walter pitched a complete game for the Friars as she recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts while holding the Warriors to seven hits and two earned runs in her fourth win of the season.

ON DECK

The Friars will return to Glay Field on Thursday (April 18) to host the University at Albany Great Danes (18-10, 7-4 AE) in another non-conference matchup. First pitch is slated to be thrown at 3:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on FloSports.
