The Friars will take on Merrimack on Wednesday and face Albany on Thursday.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team (17-18, 8-10 BIG EAST) will host Merrimack College (16-24, 10-5 NEC) on Wednesday, April 17 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. at 3:00 p.m. The Friars will return to action on Glay Field to host the University at Albany Great Danes (18-10, 7-4 AE) on Thursday, April 18 at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on FloSports.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS
The Friars enter the week with a 17-18 overall record including a 8-10 mark in BIG EAST action. Last week, the Friars compiled a 3-1 record including a three-game sweep of BIG EAST foe DePaul.
Senior and co-captain Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week this week (April 15) after she finished the last week with a .583 batting average, 1.000 slugging percentage and a .643 on-base percentage over four games. Harrington went 5-for-9 at bat and contributed six RBI and six runs in the Friars' three-game sweep over DePaul. Harrington earned her first BIG EAST weekly honor of the season and sixth of her career. Harrington currently boasts a .327 batting average, 21 RBI, 35 hits and four home runs on the season.
Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) has been a force on the Friar offense all season. She currently owns a .305 batting average, .621 slugging percentage and a .359 on-base percentage. Peterson has tallied a total of 19 RBI, 15 hits, seven home runs and 15 runs on the season. Peterson notched an impressive three home runs in the sweep over DePaul as she went 5-for-10 at the plate.
Freshman Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades this week (April 15). Twomey was a key player against DePaul both offensively and defensively for the Friars. In the circle, Twomey compiled a 1.27 ERA over 11.0 innings pitched. She struck out nine batters and only conceded six hits and two earned runs. At the plate, Twomey recorded a .600 batting average, including three hits, a .800 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. She also aided the Friars with two runs scored. It marked Twomey's fourth BIG EAST weekly honor of this season. Twomey currently owns a 2.80 ERA and 107 strikeouts while allowing 85 hits and 41 earned runs over 102.2 innings.
Senior pitcher Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) had a stand-out performance against DePaul both on the circle and at the plate. Grifone posted a 1.40 ERA and five strikeouts while only conceding one hit and one earned run in game two against the Blue Demons on April 13 (W, 9-1). Grifone aided the Friars as she went 2-4 at-bat while notching an RBI and a home run over the weekend.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
The Warriors enter the matchup with a 16-14 overall record and a 10-5 record in Northeast Conference play. Merrimack most recently defeated its NEC foe FDU in a three-game series, besting the Knights in two of the three games.
Ellen Hubbard leads the Warriors with a .890 batting average on 43 hits. Hubbard has contributed 11 RBI and 15 runs this season. Madison Cerpa has started all 40 games for Merrimack. She currently boasts 29 RBI (eight HR), 34 hits and 22 runs on the season.
Madie Fornwalt has commanded the Warrior pitching staff. Fornwalt currently owns a 7-7 record with a 3.39 ERA and 85 strikeouts. So far, she has conceded 104 hits and 43 earned runs over 114.0 innings pitched.
SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES
Albany enters mid-week play with an 18-10 overall record including a 7-4 mark in America East play. The Great Danes were most recently swept in a three-game series at Bryant.
Maddi Petrella has spearheaded the Albany offense with a .369 batting average, 31 hits, 24 RBI and 20 runs. Morgan Petty has aided the team with a team-high 25 RBI.
Wendi Hammond has commanded the circle for the Great Danes with a 13-7 record on a 1.92 ERA and 70 strikeouts over 110.0 innings pitched. Hammond has allowed 106 hits and 39 earned runs.
ON DECK
The Friars will have a weekend off before returning to action to host the Georgetown Hoyas (11-25, 2-13 BIG EAST) in a three-game series beginning on April 26.
