Softball Downs DePaul, 9-1, in Five Innings

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team defeated the DePaul University Blue Demons (8-28, 3-11 BIG EAST), 9-1, in a five-inning game two of the three-game series on Saturday, April 13 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 16-18 overall and 7-10 in BIG EAST play. Senior pitcher Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) had a stellar performance both offensively and defensively for the Friars as she registered a home run and five strikeouts in the circle to secure her first win of the season.

GAME NOTES

-The Blue Demons opened the scoring with a home run in the top of the first (1-0).

-The Friars took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two-run home run from Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.).

- In the bottom of the second, Grifone drilled a home run to left field to give PC a 4-1 edge over DePaul. This marked Grifone's first home run of the season and eighth of her career.

-PC extended its lead to 6-1 in the fourth after Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) reached on an infield single allowing for Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) to come around from second base and score on the throw. In the following play, Grifone hit an RBI single that brought Dunn across the plate.

- In the bottom of the fifth, Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) drove an RBI triple to right center that scored Hanna Alrich (Taunton, Mass.) and Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.). Petrarca walked the game off for the Friars as she hit an RBI single to score Harrington.

- Grifone earned her first win of the season in the circle for the Friars as she pitched a complete five-inning game, registering five strikeouts while conceding only one hit and one earned run.

The Friars will close out series play against the Blue Demons tomorrow (April 13) on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 12:00 p.m. For fans unable to attend, the game will be available for stream on FloSports.
