Softball Tops DePaul, 10-1, in Five Innings

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team defeated the DePaul University Blue Demons (8-27, 3-10 BIG EAST), 10-1, in a five-inning game one of the three-game series on Friday, April 12 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 15-18 overall and 6-10 in BIG EAST play. Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.), led the Friars' offensive charge with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, adding two RBI and scoring two runs.

GAME NOTES

-The Blue Demons opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first (1-0).

-The Friars took the lead in the bottom of the first as they put up four runs highlighted by an RBI triple from Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.), an RBI double by Jacque Harrington and a two-run single from Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.),. Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.), Aldrich, Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) and Harrington all made it home to give the Friars a 4-1 lead.

-PC tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second keyed by an RBI single by Harrington that scored Lee to make it a 7-1 Friar lead.

-In the bottom of the third, Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.) doubled down the left field line that brought in Lee and Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) to extend the PC lead to 9-1.

-Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) gave the Friars their 10^th run of the game after hitting a solo home run in fourth. This marked Peterson's fifth home run of the season.

-The Friars were able to shut out the Blue Demons in the top of the fifth to finish with a score of 10-1.

-Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) registered her two first collegiate hits, finishing 2-for-2 at the plate.

-Lee went 2-for-3 at bat and scored three runs.

-Renny and Twomey went 2-for-2 at the plate. Renny contributed two RBI on the day.

-Twomey pitched a complete five-inning game and earned her 11th win of the season. Twomey faced 20 batters, striking out four while holding the Blue Demons to only one hit and one earned run.

The Friars will face the Blue Demons for game two on Saturday, April 13 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1:00 p.m. For fans unable to attend, the game will be available for stream on FloSports.
