Freshman Emma Eichten went 4-for-4 at the plate and hit the game-winning RBI in game two.
STORRS, Conn.- The Providence College softball team split a doubleheader against the UConn Huskies (18-15, 6-2 BIG EAST) on Saturday, March 30 in Storrs, Conn. The Friars were defeated 4-3 in game one but were able to come back with a 3-2 win in a nine-inning game two. Freshman Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.) went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Friars in game two, recording the game-winning RBI and scoring a run. Eichten finished with two RBI, two runs and five hits on the day. Providence moved to 13-14 overall and 4-7 in BIG EAST play.
GAME ONE NOTES
-The Friars gained an early lead in the top of the first as Hanna Aldrich drilled to left center to bring Eichten home.
- The Huskies answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth (1-1).
- Providence took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) and Eichten each recorded an RBI. Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) and Petrarca crossed the plate for the Friars.
- UConn took a late lead following runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to close out the game on top, 4-3.
-Petrarca went 2-3 at the plate.
-Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) pitched 6.1 innings on the circle for the Friars. Twomey faced 29 batters, striking out seven while conceding four hits and three earned runs.
GAME TWO NOTES
-PC opened the scoring in the top of the third following a double by Aldrich to score Eichten.
-The Huskies tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
-Providence regained the lead in the top of the fifth after Lee was able to make it home off a wild pitch (2-1).
-UConn scored a run in the bottom of the seventh that tied the score, 2-2, and forced the game into extra innings.
-Emma Eitchen hit the game-winning RBI in the top of the ninth to clinch a 3-2 win for the Friars. Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) scored.
-Pitchers Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.), Twomey and Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) split time on the circle, pitching 6.1, 1.1 and 1.0 innings, respectively. Grifone struck out eight batters, conceding nine hits and two earned runs. Twomey was earned her ninth win of the season as she registered three strikeouts. Twomey and Walter each held the Huskies without hits, facing a combined 12 batters.
ON DECK
The Friars will play the final game of the three-game series against the Huskies on Monday, April 1 in Storrs, Conn. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on FloSports.
