Softball Shuts Out Stonehill in a Doubleheader

The Friars earned their first no-hitter since 2009.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team swept the Stonehill Skyhawks (4-13, 1-2 NEC) in a double header on Wednesday, March 20 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 9-12 overall and 1-5 in BIG EAST play. In game one, the Friars defeated the Skyhawks, 16-0, in five innings. Junior Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) threw the first no-hitter for the Friars since Danielle Bertolette versus St. John's on April 26, 2009. Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) hit two home runs. In game two, Providence took down Stonehill, 9-0, in five innings as six Friars recorded hits.

GAME ONE NOTES

-The Friars took an early 2-0 lead following back-to-back home runs from Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) and Douma in the bottom of the first.

-The Friars added six runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by Douma's three-run home run.

-Providence followed up with eight more runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a grand slam by Gabriella Sebastian (Ramsey, N.J.) for her first career home run.

-PC clinched a 16-0 win and closed the game out in five innings. 

-Douma and Sebastian each tallied four RBI. Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) followed with three RBI.

-Douma hit two home runs as she went 2-for-3 at the plate.

-Walter pitched a complete game on the circle for the Friars, pitching five scoreless innings including three strikeouts. It marked the first no-hitter for the Friars since 2009.

GAME TWO NOTES

-The Friars opened the scoring after a two-run double by freshman Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.).

-PC scored three more runs in the bottom of the third. Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.), De La Fuente and Ryanne Haynes (Bellingham, Mass.) all made it home after RBI singles from Haynes and Rachel Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.).

-The Friars secured a 9-0 win with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out the games in five innings.

-Aldrich and De La Fuente each recorded two RBI.

-Peterson crossed the plate twice for the Friars.

-Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) was awarded her fifth win of the season and her first on Glay Field, pitching a complete game on the circle. Twomey struck out eight batters while conceding only three hits.

The Friars will host the St. John's Red Storm (14-14, 4-2 BIG EAST) in a three-game series beginning on March 22 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
