Alyssa Twomey struck out 16 batters over 12 combined innings and earned the win in game two.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team split a doubleheader against the St. John's Red Storm (15-15, 5-3 BIG EAST) on Friday, March 22 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars moved to 10-13 overall, including a 2-6 mark in the BIG EAST. The Friars fell, 3-2, in a nine-inning game to the Red Storm in game one and bested St. John's, 2-1, in game two. Freshman pitcher Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) pitched a combined 12 innings over the two games and struck out 16 batters, while giving up just one earned run.
GAME ONE NOTES
• Junior Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first by doubling to right-center field and scoring Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.).
• The Johnnies answered with a run in the top of the third.
• Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) hit a solo home run to put the Friars back on top, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth.
• St. John's tied the score, 2-2, in the top of the fifth.
• As the game extended into extra innings, the Red Storm scored in top of the ninth to secure a 3-2 victory over the Friars.
•Douma recorded two hits, while Peterson earned the lone RBI of the game.
•Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) split time in the circle pitching 4.0 and 5.0 innings, respectively. Grifone and Twomey struck out a combined nine batters in the game.
GAME TWO NOTES
•Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) put Providence on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to score Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.).
• SJU tied the score with a run in the top of the third (1-1).
• The Friars gained a 2-1 advantage late in the sixth inning as Aldrich crossed the plate following an RBI single by Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.).
•The Friars were able to fend off SJU in the seventh with a final score of 2-1 in favor of PC.
•Both Harrington and Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) went 2-for-3 on the plate.
•Twomey pitched a complete game for the Friars. She struck out eight batters, allowed six hits and gave up just one earned run.
ON DECK
The Friars will close out the three-game series versus the Red Storm on Sunday, March 24. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1:30 p.m. on Glay Field and will be broadcasted on FloSports.
