Softball Defeats Butler, 9-7, In BIG EAST Action

Emma Douma and Gabriella Lee combined for five RBI.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Providence College softball team defeated Butler (12-11 2-1 BIG EAST) in game three of the three-game series against the Bulldogs on Tuesday, March 12. The Friars improved to 7-9 overall and a 1-2 mark in BIG EAST play. Junior Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) and sophomore Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) led the Friar offense combining for five of the nine RBI in the game. Douma registered three RBI, one hit and one run scored while Lee went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.

GAME NOTES

-The Friars scored four runs in the top of the second to open the scoring. With the bases loaded, Douma hit a three-run double to give the Friars a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) knocked in Douma with an RBI single.

-The Bulldogs countered with three runs in the second and another in the third to tie the score at 4-4 entering the fourth inning.

-Providence took back the lead with five runs in the top of the fifth. Lee's two-run double and second hit of the game highlighted the inning. Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.), Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.), Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.), Lee and Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash,) all crossed the plate for the Friars in the fifth inning.

-Butler countered late with three runs in the seventh inning

-Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.), Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) and Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) all spent equal time on the circle for Providence, each pitching 2.1 innings. Grifone faced 15 batters, striking out two while allowing four earned runs. Quirk was credited with the win after allowing zero hits and only one earned run.

-Peterson recorded two hits in the game while Harrington, Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.), Dunn, and Eichten tallied one hit each.

ON DECK

The Friars will host Villanova University (11-11, 3-0 BIG EAST) for the 2024 season home opener. The two teams will play a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 15.
