Softball Splits Double-Header Against St. John’s In BIG EAST Action

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence College softball team (7-10, 1-1 BIG EAST) split two games against St. John's in BIG EAST play on Friday, March 10 in Queens, N.Y. The Red Storm defeated the Friars, 5-2, in game one and the Friars earned the 2-1 win over St. John's in game two.
GAME ONE
-St. John's Jess Bianco hit an RBI single to give the Red Storm a 1-0 advantage in the third inning.
-In the top of the fifth inning, senior Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Penn.) homered to left field to even the score 1-1.
-St. John's scored three runs in the fifth inning to regain the advantage, 4-1.
-Sophomore Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) doubled to right center field in the seventh inning. Freshman Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) scored on the hit.
-Junior Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) pitched a complete game for the Friars striking out six batters.
GAME TWO
-Sophomore Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) hit a two-run homerun in the top of the second to give the Friars a 2-0 lead.
-The next four innings remained scoreless for both teams.
-In the bottom of the seventh, St. John's got on the scoreboard by scoring a run but the Friars held on to their lead, 2-1.
-Senior Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) improved to 3-0 in the circle pitching a complete game for the Friars. She only allowed one run and struck out three batters.

The Friars will conclude the three-game series against St. John's on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m.
