DELAND, Fla. – The Providence College softball team fell to Dayton, 10-5, and Stetson, 13-1, in five innings on Friday, Feb. 10 in day one of the Frank Griffin Classic in DeLand, Fla.
GAME ONE NOTES
-Dayton got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first giving the Flyers an early 3-0 lead.
-In the third inning, sophomore
Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) hit an RBI single with bases loaded. Freshman
Geanice Morales (San Antonio, Texas) scored her first collegiate run for the Friars.
-Dayton answered with two more runs in the bottom of the third extending their lead to four, 5-1.
-Sophomore
Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) singled down the left field line bringing in two runs. Morales and senior
Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) scored to cut the Friars lead to two, 5-3.
-Freshman
Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) stole home scoring her first collegiate run to slim the Flyers lead to one, 5-4
.
-The Flyers answered with five runs to take a 10-4 advantage heading into the sixth.
-Sophomore
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) pitched a complete game for the Friars recording four strikeouts.
-Sophomore
Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) had a team-high two hits.
GAME TWO NOTES
-The Hatters got off to a strong start by scoring seven runs in the first inning.
-The Friars could not find the answer and allowed four more runs before getting on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.
-Sophomore
Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) scored for the Friars off an RBI from senior
Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Penn.).
-Freshmen
Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas) and
Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) made their pitching debuts for the Friars pitching 0.2 and 3.1 innings, respectively.
ON DECK
The Friars will play two games in day two of the Frank Griffin Classic. Providence will face Fairleigh Dickinson at 12:00 p.m. and Stetson at 3:00 p.m.
