PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will travel to Towson, Md. to compete in the DeMarini Tiger Clash from March 4 – March 6. Providence will open the tournament on Friday, March 4 with two games against Coppin State University and Towson University. The Friars will face Columbia University and Coppin State University on Saturday, March 5. On Sunday, March 6 Providence will play its final game of the tournament against Columbia.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars enter the tournament 5-5 overall after posting a 4-1 record in the Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational followed by a 1-4 record in the Gaucho Classic in Santa Barbara, Calif. last weekend.
Sophomore
Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) leads the charge at the plate with a .440 batting average over the Friars' last eight games. She has gone 11-for-25 tied for a team-high of three home runs and a team-high six RBI. Freshman
Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) has also contributed three home runs and five RBI this season. As a team, the Friars have hit 10 home runs and totaled 32 RBI in 10 games.
Sophomore
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) has pitched a team-high 33.1 innings in the circle, posting 3-2 record. She has recorded 40 strikeouts and held batters to a .269 batting average. Senior
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) has pitched in five games for the Friars, holding batters to a .224 batting average.
SCOUTING COPPIN STATE
The Bald Eagle's head into the tournament with a 0-5 overall record.
Jaslyn Sanchez and Brooke Caballero are the only two batters hitting over .300 to open the season for the Bald Eagles. Sanchez has recorded a .444 batting average and is tied for a team-high with four hits. Caballero also has contributed four hits and one home run on the season.
Vanessa Carrizosa has pitched a team-high 14.2 innings, accumulating a 6.68 ERA.
SCOUTING TOWSON
The Tigers are 1-11 through the early portion of the season, playing in three tournaments in North and South Carolina.
At the plate, Sydni Byers leads the team with a .481 batting average. She also leads the team in home runs (2) and is tied for hits (13). Briana Ramirez is close behind with a .382 batting average with 13 hits.
Julia Jackson has pitched 31.2 innings for the Tigers, holding batters to a .281 batting average and recording 24 strikeouts.
SCOUTING COLUMBIA
The Lions have posted a 1-5 overall record to begin the season. Most recently, the team fell to Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-3, on Wednesday, March 2.
Bubba Gleaves leads the team with a .400 batting average and three RBI over six games. Maria Pagane has a team-high seven hits with a .350 batting average.
Four separate players have seen time in the circle. Raquel Reyes has pitched 15.2 innings, posting a 4.02 ERA and holding batters to a .246 batting average.
ON DECK
The Friars will play cross-town rival Brown University on Wednesday, March 9 in Providence, R.I. at 3:30 p.m.
