Softball Splits Doubleheader with Butler

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
-In game one, Providence scored the opening five runs to propel Providence to an 7-2.
-Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) started the scoring for the Friars, hitting her first home run of the season on a three-run shot in the first inning. Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) walked and Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) singled and stole first and second to get in scoring position.
-Tomaso helped improve the Friar's lead, 5-0, by driving in two runs from Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) and Evix in the bottom of the third.
-Butler got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI single.
-Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) added a home run for the Friars, 6-2, her first of the season.
-Nunez scored off of a double to center field by Grifone at the bottom of the fifth, 7-2.
-Junior Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched the first four innings, allowing five hits and striking out four batters. Sarah Gunderson (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) closed the door in the last three innings allowing just three hits with two strike outs.
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
-The Bulldogs amassed … hits in game two, racing out to a 5-0 lead throughout two innings in a 9-2 victory.
- Gianna Magrino (Mamaronek, N.Y.) scored for the Friars off of a grounder by Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.), 5-1, in the bottom of the third.
-Butler increased their lead, 9-1, with a home run from Fey, L with bases loaded in the fifth inning.
-Gunderson singled up the middle in the bottom of the fifth and Magrino ran it in from second, 9-2.
-Tori Grifone started in the circle for the Friars, allowing three hits and two earned runs in two innings while striking out four.
-Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) pitched the final five innings for Providence, surrendering five hits with four strike outs.
 
ON DECK
Providence will play the Bulldogs again tomorrow, April 24 at 1:00 p.m., to complete their three-game series next weekend.
