PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team opens up its 2021 campaign at home at Glay Field to play the Boston University Terriers in a pair of doubleheaders on March 7 at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. and March 8 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars finished the 2020 season with an overall record of 6-11 and did not compete in a BIG EAST game.
Providence returns top hitter
Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) in the starting lineup. During the 2020 season, Tomaso recorded a .348 batting average with 16 hits, 14 RBI and four home runs. The junior also impressed in her freshman campaign, posting a .286 batting average, 25 RBI and finishing tied for the team lead in home runs (five), helping Providence to a 30-22 record.
Providence will have to replace the loss of
Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) in the starting lineup. Compton was tied for the team-high in hits (16), and came in at second in RBI's (13).
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) will look to lead the pitching staff for the Friars. Alvarez posted a 3.68 ERA on the staff last season, including 32 strikeouts and holding opposing hitters to just a .239 batting average.
The Friars welcome in six new members to the program for the 2021 season –
Natalie Orchard (Walla Walla, Wash.),
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.),
Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.), and
Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.). Providence also welcomes in transfers
Sarah Gunderson (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and
Madi Traver (Irving, Texas). Gunderson is a grad student who spent the previous four seasons at University of Rhode Island. Traver is a junior who played three seasons at the University of Virginia.
SCOUTING BOSTON UNIVERSITY:
The Boston University Terriers wrapped up last season with a 14-8 overall record in non-conference play. They did not play in a conference game.
Junior Aliyah Huerta-Leipner is their most notable returning position player, she hit .333 last season with 22 hits and 18 RBI in only 22 games. Caitlin Coker and Marina Sylvestri also return for the Terriers, who helped their the team offensively last season each recording 19 hits. Coker scored 14 runs while Sylvestri put up one home run.
Senior Ali DuBois will return for the Terriers in the circle. Last season she recorded a 9-5 overall record in 87.1 innings. She posted a 1.44 ERA and recorded 95 strikeouts.
ON DECK:
The Friars will return to Glay Field Friday, March 12 and Saturday, March 13 for a home series against Creighton University. Beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., the Friars will wrap up the weekend against the Blue Jays on Sunday, at 12:00 pm.
