Softball Prepares For Pair Of Games Against Ohio And Cleveland State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will play a pair of games against Ohio and Cleveland State on Tuesday, March 10 in Clearwater, Fl. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. against the Bobcats and 3:00 p.m. against the Vikings.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars concluded the 2020 Spring Break Invitational this past weekend with a 3-2 record, improving to 6-9 on the season. Providence defeated Florida A&M, Robert Morris and Yale while dropping contests to Bowling Green and Western Michigan.
The duo of Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) and Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) has led the team at the plate. Tomaso leads the team with a .366 batting average compared to Compton's .348 mark. Compton recently nabbed BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll honors after going 7-16 in the leadoff spot in the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational. She recorded two doubles, one triple and one home run over the weekend. The pair have combined to hit nine of the team's 13 home runs this season.
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) has pitched a team-high 47.1 innings in the circle, posting a 3-5 record. She has recorded 31 strike outs and held batters to .242 batting average, while pitching five complete games. Freshman Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) has pitched in six games for the Friars, while totaling a 2.57 ERA.
SCOUTING OHIO:
The Bobcats enter Tuesday with a 10-14 overall record. The team most recently posted a 3-2 mark in The Spring Games after defeating USC Upstate, St. Bonaventure and Merrimack while losing to Iowa and South Dakota State.
At the plate, junior Allie Englant leads the team with a .423 batting average. She also leads the team in runs (21) and hits (33). Katie Yun and Caroline Spacek are the other players hitting above .300. Yun has hit for a team-high 23 RBI and five home runs. Spacek has played in all 24 games, posting a .303 average.
Four pitchers have seen time in the circle for Ohio, with Madi McCrady and Baylie Thornhill making at least 10 appearances. McCrady has pitched a team-high 59.2 innings with Thornhill notching 53.1 innings of work.
SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE:
Cleveland State boasts an identical 6-9 record after recording a 3-3 mark over the weekend. The Vikings dropped contests to Charleston Southern, Creighton and Valpariaso while earning victories against North Carolina A&T, Behtune-Cookman and Pennsylvania.
Seven of the Vikings' starting nine have started all 14 games for the team. Three of those starters have hit for over a .300 average in Kelly Hysong, Mackenzie Tucker and Lindsay Ward. Tucker leads the starters with a .414 average with a team-high 12 hits.
Senior Kelly Hysong has started six games for the Vikings with sophomore Taylor Betz starting five games. Hysong holds a 2.32 ERA with 38 strikeouts.
ON DECK:
Providence will compete in the 2020 Clearwater Spring Break Invitational for the second time this season with games against Penn State (March 13), Army (March 13 and March 15), UT-Chattanooga (March 14) and Winthrop (March 14).
