Providence Set To Compete In 2020 Clearwater Spring Break Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will travel to Clearwater, Fl. to compete in the 2020 Clearwater Spring Break Invitational on March 6- 8. The Friars will matchup against Bowling Green and Florida A&M on day one, followed by a doubleheader against Western Michigan and Robert Morris on Saturday, March 7. Providence will wrap up play against Yale on Sunday, March 8.
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars currently hold a 3-7 overall record after posting a 2-3 mark in the 2020 Bearkat Classic followed by a 1-4 record in The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fl. last weekend.
 
Sophomore Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) leads the charge at the plate with a .360 batting average, playing in all 10 games. She was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll last week after hitting for a career-high six RBI, including a grand slam against Merrimack. Tomaso has tallied three home runs on the season with a team-high 10 RBI. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) holds a team-high four home runs alongside seven RBI. As a team, the Friars have hit 10 home runs and totaled 38 RBI in 10 games.
 
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) has pitched a team-high 19.1 innings in the circle, posting a 2-3 record. She has recorded 18 strike outs and held batters to .260 batting average, while pitching three complete games. Freshman Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) has pitched in five games for the Friars, while totaling a 3.52 ERA. 
 
SCOUTING BOWLING GREEN:
The Falcons are 6-6 through the early portion of the season, playing in three tournaments in the state of Tennessee.
 
At the plate, senior Madi McCoy leads the team with a .308 batting average. She also leads the team in runs (11) and hits (12). Redshirt sophomore Sammy Dees has been a nice compliment to McCoy, batting .300 while leading the team in slugging percentage (.45) and on-base percentage (.462).
 
Freshman Payton Gottshall has had an impressive start to her collegiate career, tossing seven complete games in her nine starts, including three complete-game one-hitters. She was named MAC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 25.
 
SCOUTING FLORIDA A&M:
The Rattlers head into the tournament with a 2-12 overall record. Six of their 14 games have come against top-25 opponents, including an 0-5 stretch to start the season against ranked opponents.
 
Jamesia Stoudemire is one of three players to start all 14 games for Florida A&M. She is hitting .295 including two home runs and three RBI. Destiny Cuevas is close behind with a .286 batting average, she has played in eleven games for the Rattlers.
 
Freshman Nadia Zenteno has pitched in a team-high nine games, accumulating a 6.30 ERA in 30.0 innings pitched. Kyaira Brown and Brandice Boatwright have recorded the lone wins for the Rattlers.
 
SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN:
Western Michigan is currently 3-13 to open their season with three of those matchups coming against ranked opponents. The Broncos upset No. 22 Arizona State University on Feb. 8 with a 9-7 victory.
 
Sydney Stefanick and Kaylen Glenfield are the only two batters hitting over .300 to open the season for the Broncos. Stefanick has a team-high 19 hits alongside Glenfield's 15. The pair has combined for 13 RBI and three home runs. Mackensie Swinehart is the lone player to start all 16 games with Stefanick and Glenfield in the starting nine. Swinehart is hitting .255 on the season with one home run and four RBI.
 
Sydney Stefanick and Autumn Godwin have handled the work in the circle, combining to start nine of the teams 16 games. Stefanick posts a 6.99 ERA with three complete games. The staff has pitched to a 8.20 ERA.

SCOUTING ROBERT MORRIS:
The Colonials head into the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational with a 6-8 overall record. Most recently, the team went 2-3 in the Seahawk Softball Challenge with splits against Marist and UNC-Wilmington, while dropping a contest to Toledo. 
 
Erika Bell enters the tournament with a team-high .417 batting average starting in six of the teams 14 games. Natalie Higgins, Briana Bunner, Taryn Miller, and Madison Riggle have started in each contest and are all hitting over .300. The team has combined for eight home runs and 50 RBI.
 
Four separate players have seen time in the circle. Dana Vatakis has pitched five complete games and records a 4-5 mark. She posts a 2.33 ERA and held batters to a .205 batting average.
 
SCOUTING YALE:
The Bulldogs hold a 4-6 overall record. Yale posted a 2-3 mark in the Silicon Valley Classic and Liberty Classic.
 
Annie Tarte, Giovy Webb and Sydney Grobman are all hitting over .300. Tarte has a team-high 12 hits with Grobman recording 11. The team has combined for five home runs over its 10 games.
 
Four pitchers have made at least three appearances for Yale. Nic Conway leads the staff with a 2.67 ERA and two complete games.
 
ON DECK:
Providence will play a pair of games against Ohio and Cleveland State on Tuesday, March 10 in between the team's spring break tournaments.
