Softball Defeats Merrimack In Final Game Of The Spring Games, 13-3

MADEIRA BEACH, Fl. - The Providence College softball team defeated the Merrimack Warriors, 13-3, in the team's final game of The Spring Games on Sunday, Feb. 23. Providence improves to 3-7 on the season with the victory. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence used an eight-run third inning to fuel the 13-3 victory  in five innings. 
- Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) continued her hot start to the 2020 season with a lead-off home run to build an early 1-0 lead. Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) added an RBI double in the top half of the first to take a 2-0 lead into the second inning. 
- The Friars posted eight runs in the top of the third inning to take an 10-0 lead. Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Penn.) started the run with an RBI single to plate Tomaso. Lauren Nuñez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) and Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) added RBI singles before Molly McGarry (Edina, Minn.) walked with the bases loaded. Tomaso capped off the inning with a grand slam. The home run marked her third of her sophomore campaign. 
- Merrimack inched back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI double, run on a passed ball and an RBI groundout. 
- Compton notched her second home run of the game and fourth of season with a solo shot in the top of the fifth inning. Tomaso brought home Danielle Towle (Bridgewater, N.J.) with an RBI single and Marisa Jenkins (Randolph, N.J.) earned a walk with the bases loaded to finish the scoring, giving Providence a 13-3 cushion. 
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched her second complete game of the season, allowing three earned runs over the course of five innings. She struckout three batters and improved to 2-3 on the season. 
- Tomaso went 4-4 at the plate and hit for a career-high six RBI in the win. Compton's two home runs marked her first multi-home run performance of her career. Seven separate players notched a hit in the contest.

Providence will compete in the 2020 Clearwater Spring Break Invitational on March 6-March 8 with matchups against Bowling Green, Florida A&M, Western Michigan, Robert Morris and Yale.
