Softball Falls In Doubleheader At The Spring Games

MADEIRA BEACH, Fl. -  The Providence College softball team dropped two games in day two of The Spring Games, 9-2 to Stony Brook, followed by a 7-3 defeat to South Dakota. Providence falls to 2-7 on the season.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence failed to comeback from a five-run deficit after the opening two innings, falling to Stony Brook, 9-2.
- The Seawolves tallied three runs in the top of the first inning and top of the second, with Providence tallying one in the first as Stony Brook took a 6-1 lead into the third inning.
- Stony Brook opened the game with a two-RBI double to take an early lead, followed by a groundout that plated Jordyn Nowakowski.
- Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) hit her second home run of the season in the bottom half of the first with a solo shot to left center field to cut the deficit to 3-1.
- Jourdin Hering answered with an two RBI triple followed by a Seawolves RBI single and sac fly to take a 6-1 lead to the third inning.
- Hering added a solo home run in the top of the fourth before Stony Brook capped off its scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth.
- Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) notched her second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 9-2 game.
- Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) started the game in the circle and was the pitcher of record. Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) relieved Trinidad and pitched five innings, striking out five batters over five innings of work.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- South Dakota used four unanswered after the game was even at 3-3 to defeat the Friars in game two, 7-3.
- The Coyotes opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single and sac fly to center field.
- Providence responded with three runs in the top half of the third inning. Lauren Nuñez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) recorded her first RBI of the season with an RBI single to left field to cut the lead to 2-1. Compton followed with a sac fly to level the game at 2-2. The Friars ended the inning scoring on a fielding error by the shortstop to take their first lead of the night, 3-2.
- South Dakota tied the game in the bottom half of the third, 3-3, after Courtney Wilson hit an RBI infield single to shortstop.
-  The Coyotes tallied three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning followed by a solo run in the fifth to take a 7-3 into the sixth inning.
- Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) earned the start and pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs. Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) relieved Murphy before Alvarez pitched the final inning.
