PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will continue play in The Spring Games on Feb. 21-Feb. 23 in Madeira Beach, Fl. The Friars will open play with a double header against Columbia and Albany (Feb. 21), followed by a pair of games versus Stony Brook and South Dakota (Feb. 22) before wrapping up the tournament against Merrimack (Feb. 23).
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars opened the regular season posting a 2-3 record in the 2020 Bearkat Classic. Providence fell in the opening three games to Houston Baptist (twice) and Sam Houston State before finalizing the tournament with back-to-back wins against Sam Houston State and George Mason.
Marisa Jenkins (Randolph, N.J.) went 3-9 at the plate after missing last season due to injury. Freshman
Gianna Magrino (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and
Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Penn.) also brought power to the lineup, each tallying their first home runs. Wren hit a walk-off two-run shot versus George Mason to close out the tournament. The team combined to hit five home runs over the course of five games with 12 extra base hits.
Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.J.) posted a team-high four RBI after hitting a grand slam versus Sam Houston State in Providence's 11-7 victory.
Freshman
Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) impressed in the circle, pitching 10.1 innings while allowing zero earned runs and striking out six. She recorded her first collegiate win in the process.
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched the Friars lone complete game to open the season in their 3-1 victory over George Mason.
SCOUTING COLUMBIA:
The Columbia Lions will open their season in The Spring Games. Last season, the team posted a 24-21 overall record with a 15-6 conference mark in the Ivy League.
The Lions return Max Ortega to the lineup, who recorded a team-high .397 batting average last season while tallying 40 RBI. She hit four home runs and posted a .610 slugging percentage. Senior Sommer Grzybek will return for her senior season after hitting a team-high nine home runs last season, she added 28 RBI.
Columbia will lose Alexa Pinarski in the circle who made 28 appearances last season, including 22 starts. Madison Canby will handle most of the work after making 27 appearances last season with a 10-7 overall record. She pitched 119.2 while striking out 59 batters, she posted a 3.28 ERA.
SCOUTING ALBANY:
The Great Danes have yet to play a game for the 2020 season. Last season, the team recorded a 26-17 overall record and 13-4 mark in the America East.
Katie Falotico led the Great Danes last season with a .352 batting average, 34 runs scored, 50 hits and 41 RBI's. Sophomores Love Drumgole and Chloe Lewis return after strong rookie season being named to the America East All-Rookie Team. Drumgole started 38 games at shortstop while Lewis made 18 appearances in the circle.
Albany finished 2019 third in the America East in ERA (3.11), and first in putouts (911) and fielding percentage (.968). Maranda Jiminez was third on the team among pitchers in ERA (3.50), and tallied an overall record of 5-5.
SCOUTING STONY BROOK:
The Seawolves will be the third team opening their season in The Spring Games. Stony Brook went 32-19 last season with an 11-7 America East mark. The team fell in the America East Championship to UMBC.
Stony Brook will be led by two-time America East Player of the Year Melissa Rahrich. Rahrich hit .418 at the plate last season with a team-high 17 home runs and 60 RBI. The team returns seven starters from a season ago, Jourdin Hering and Jordyn Nowakowski were named to the America East second team last season.
The Seawolves return a strong pitching staff. Joining Rahrich, 2019 all-rookie team member
Shelbi Denman returns for her sophomore season after winning 10 games in 2019. Junior College transfer
Dawn Bodrug joins the staff after two seasons at Indian River State College, where she struck out 261 batters in 183 innings during her sophomore season.
SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA:
The Coyotes are currently 4-7 on the season after playing in the UNI Doc Halverson Tournament and Madeira Beach Invitational.
South Dakota's Courtney Wilson enters the tournament with a nine-game hitting streak and team-best .389 batting average. She went 8-17 at the plate in the Coyotes' six games last week. Freshman Jordyn Pender drove in three runs while going 7-18 at the dish.
Sarah Lisko pitched two complete games Monmouth and Georgia State last week. She posts a 3-1 overall record with a 2.76 ERA.
SCOUTING MERRIMACK:
The Warriors will open their season in The Spring Games after going 25-23 a year ago. The team posted a 15-12 mark in the Division II Northeast-10 Conference. Merrimack will join the Northeast Conference this season.
Luciellia Colarusso hit a team-high .346 last season and will return for her junior season. She recorded 46 hits, including 17 RBI.
Jenna Wike had an impressive freshman season in the circle, making a team-high 30 appearances. She recorded a 2.02 ERA and 8-6 overall record.
ON DECK:
The Friars will continue play in the 2020 Clearwater Spring Break Invitational on March 6-March 8. Providence will play five games against Bowling Green, Florida A&M, Western Michigan, Robert Morris and Yale.
