Softball Splits Doubleheader On Day Two Of Bearkat Classic

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Providence College softball team split games on day two of the Bearkat Classic with a 5-3 setback to Houston Baptist before an 11-5 win over Sam Houston State for the Friars' first win of the season on Saturday, Feb. 15. Providence is now 1-3 overall on the season.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Houston Baptist Huskies used a four-run fourth inning to beat the Friars, 5-3, in game one of Providence's double header.
- Heidi Jacquez broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI double to center field.
- Providence leveled the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning with an RBI double off the bat of Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) to right center field that plated Lauren Nuñez (Rowland Heights, Calif.).
- Houston Baptist answered with four runs in the following half inning with an RBI double, RBI single and two-run home run over the left field fence to seal the 5-3 victory.
- The Friars inched back in the top of the fifth inning on Compton's second and third RBI of the game, blasting a two-run shot to left field.  
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) was the pitcher of record, she went 2.1 innings allowing five hits and five earned runs. Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) continued her early success, relieving Trinidad and allowing just three hits over 3.2 innings of work. She allowed zero earned runs and struck out one.
- Marisa Jenkins (Randolph, N.J.) and Nuñez each recorded multi-hit efforts.
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence capitalized on an eight-run fourth inning to beat Sam Houston State University in the Friars' first victory of the season, 11-5.
- The Friars notched the first runs of the game with a pair in the top of the first inning. Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) plated Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) with an RBI double to left field to hand the Friars a 1-0 lead. Jenkins followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring a 2-0 lead to the second inning.
- The Berkats notched five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead on four hits and one error for Providence.
- Providence's bats came alive in the top of fourth inning, the Friars scored eight runs on five hits. Gianna Magrino (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) hit the first home run of her career to bring Providence within one, 5-4. Molly McGarry (Edina, Minn.) handed Providence its first lead of the night, 6-4, with a two RBI double to right center field that plated Villani and Compton.
- Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) blasted a grand slam to left field that gave the Friars a 10-4 lead to cap off the fourth inning. The home run marked her first of the 2020 campaign.
- Providence added a solo run in the top of the sixth inning as Sam Houston State walked in a run to give the Friars an 11-6 lead.  
- Sam Houston State chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double to left field and a sacrifice fly.
- Cunnigan earned her first win in a Friar uniform pitching the final 3.1 innings allowing zero earned runs.
- Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) started in the circle and allowed four earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.

Providence will wrap up the Bearkat Classic with a matchup against George Mason tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
