PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team opens up its 2020 season at Sam Houston State University, who will play host to the 2020 Bearkat Classic in Huntsville, Texas on Feb. 14-16. The Friars will play a pair of games against Houston Baptist (Feb. 14, Feb. 15) and Sam Houston State (Feb. 14, Feb. 15), before wrapping up the tournament against George Mason (Feb. 16).

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 30-22 and a record of 11-9 in the BIG EAST. Providence finished third overall in the BIG EAST before falling in the BIG EAST Semifinals to DePaul, 4-0.

The Friars return six of their nine starters from the 2019 season, including Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) and Jessica Tomaso. During the 2019 season, Compton recorded a .314 batting average with 33 hits, 16 RBI and four home runs. Tomaso impressed in her freshman campaign, posting a .286 batting average, 25 RBI and finishing tied for the team lead in home runs (five).

Providence will have to replace Emma Lee '19 (Orange, Calif.) in right field, who earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors a year ago. Lee ended her career as the all-time hits leader at Providence College (238). She also finished her career with the highest batting average (.377) in program history and second in most runs scored (130).

Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) will look to lead the pitching staff after a stellar freshman campaign. Alvarez was named the BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year and was only one of two freshmen to make the All-BIG EAST First Team. She recorded an 18-8 record in the circle with a 2.21 ERA. She posted six shutouts and held opposing hitters to a .219 batting average.

SCOUTING HOUSTON BAPTIST:
The Houston Baptist Huskies finished last season with a .500 record, 23-23. The team posted a 10-16 record in the Southland Conference.

The Huskies return Heidi Jaquez, who posted the second highest average on the team last season (.277). She recorded 39 hits and started all 46 games. Caitlyn Brockway returns to the lineup and will bring the power for Houston Baptist. She hit for a team-high 12 home runs in her freshman season.

The Huskies will pitch by committee, with three separate pitchers seeing at least 24 appearances last season. Jessica Patak started a team-high 17 games despite posting the highest ERA on the team (5.84). Emma Guindon saw the most success, recording a 9-7 overall record with a 3.44 ERA.

SCOUTING SAM HOUSTON STATE:
The Sam Houston State Bearkats finished last season with a record of 35-23 overall and 22-5 in the Southland Conference. The team won the Southland Conference Championship, defeating Nicholls State in two games. The Bearkats moved onto the Austin Regional in the NCAA Tournament where they defeated No. 9 Texas in their first game, before being eliminated by consecutive losses to Houston and Texas.

Sam Houston State returns Tiffany Thompson to the lineup for her senior campaign. Last year she hit for a team-high .308 batting average, with seven home runs and 29 RBI. Brooke Malia also returns to the starting nine after starting all 58 games last season, hitting a team-high 12 home runs, while accumulating 39 RBI in the process.

SCOUTING GEORGE MASON:
The George Mason Patriots wrapped up last season with a 22-26 overall record and 10-12 record in Atlantic 10 play. The team dropped all five games in the Stetson Hatter Roundup to open 2020 against Sam Houston State (twice), Stetson (twice) and Boston University.

The Patriots will have to fill the gap of Alyssa Lawton in the lineup. She hit for a team high .346 average a year ago with a .391 on base percentage. The Patriots return their power to the lineup as first baseman Adriana Erickson hit five of the team's 11 total home runs.

George Mason will return veterans in the circle, with graduate student Bekah Ansbro, senior Marina Vitalich and junior Haellie Gordon. Each pitcher made at least 27 appearances in 2019. Ansbro led the staff with a 2.42 ERA despite posting a 8-11 record.
