Softball Drops Opening Two Games Of Bearkat Classic

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Providence College softball team dropped its opening two games in the Bearkat Classic to open the 2020 campaign. The Friars lost in game one to Houston Baptist, 7-1, followed by a 9-1 defeat to Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas. 

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Houston Baptist used a four-run fourth inning to propel the Huskies over Providence, 7-1, in the Friars' season opener.
- The Huskies notched one run in the first inning on an RBI double to center field off the bat of Jasie Robert.
- Houston Baptist added to it's lead with a solo run in the third inning followed by a four-run fourth. Megan Hiers tallied the RBI in the third on a ground ball to shortstop. The Huskies followed with two home runs the following inning on top of an RBI single to right field.
- Amber Lotz pushed the final run across the plate for the Huskies with an RBI single up the middle to take a 7-0 lead. 
- Providence threatened in the seventh inning after Houston Baptist loaded the bases with three consecutive walks. The Friars scored their lone run on a walking in a run with Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) at the plate. 
- Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) earned the start in the circle and gave up six earned runs over 3.2 innings. Freshman Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) relieved Trinidad for her first collegiate appearance. She pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and zero earned runs. 

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- The Friars fell in a 2-0 hole in the first inning and couldn't inch back as Sam Houston State defeated the Friars in their second game of a doubleheader, 9-1. 
- The Bearkats built a 5-0 led through three innings of play tallying two runs in the first, one in the second and a pair of runs in the third inning. 
- The first run crossed the plate unearned on a throwing error but Sam Houston State's bats came alive with an RBI single, solo shot to left field and an RBI double to cap off the third inning. 
- Gianna Magrino (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) earned her first RBI in a Friar uniform in the top of the fourth inning as she was walked with the bases loaded. 
- Sam Houston State capped off the scoring with two sacrifice flies and an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat the Friars in five innings, 9-1. 
- Tomaso recorded the lone hit for Providence in the top of the second inning. 
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) was the pitcher of record, allowing three earned runs over the course of three innings of work. Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits. 

ON DECK
Providence will play a double header tomorrow, Feb. 15 with rematches against Houston Baptist and Sam Houston State. First pitch is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. (ET) against the Huskies followed by an 8:00 p.m. (ET) start time in game two versus the Bearkats.
