Ilarda And Wheeler Earn Second Team All-America Honors

Brianna Ilarda and Abbey Wheeler competed in the final day of the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.

AUSTIN, TEXAS- The Providence College women's track team had two athletes compete in the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, June 8. Senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) competed in the finals of the 3,000 meter steeplechase and junior Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) competed in the 5,000 meter finals. To earn First or Second Team All-America honors, athletes must place in the top-16.
Ilarda raced in the finals of the 3,000 meter steeplechase. She positioned herself towards the back of the pack early in the race. The field remained tightly bunched for a majority of the final. With three laps to go, the pack began to string out with Ilarda running in the ninth position. Ilarda would go on to finish 10thoverall in a time of 10:11.63, earning Second Team All-America Honors. This is Ilarda's fourth All-America Honor of her career.
Wheeler concluded the day for the Friars in the finals of the 5,000 meters. She positioned herself in the middle of pack from the gun. The group of 24 competitors ran together for half the race. With four laps to go the field began to string out with Wheeler maintaining her position in the top-15. Wheeler would go on to finish strong placing 14thoverall (16:23.42) to earn Second Team All-American Honors. This is Wheeler's second All-America Honor of her career.
