JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - The Providence College track team competed in the final day of the NCAA First Round on Saturday, May 25 in Jacksonville, Fla. Senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va.) and graduate student Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) started off the day for the Friars in the 1,500 meter finals. They were followed by junior Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) who competed in the final of the 5,000 meters.

Paladino started off the day for the Friars in the second heat of the women's 1,500 meter finals. To qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, competitors must place top-five in their heat or run the next two fastest times. Paladino positioned herself in the top-five from the gun. As the race progressed, a Notre Dame athlete took the lead and began to form a gap from the rest of the pack. Paladino settled in the chase pack waiting for one final move. With 400 meters to go, Paladino surged and kicked passed two more competitors. She would go on to place second in her heat in a time of 4:15.85 and auto-qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Paladino's time marked the second fastest time of the day and was a season best. This will be Paladino's second time qualifying for the championships.

Wyman ran a solid race in the first heat of the men's 1,500 meter finals. He positioned himself towards the back of the field waiting for the break to happen. As the race progressed, Wyman kept moving through the field and go on to finish ninth in his heat in a time of 3:53.03. Wyman placed 19thoverall in the finals, his highest career finish at the NCAA First Round.

To conclude the final day of competition, Wheeler competed in the finals of the women's 5,000 meters. To qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 meters, competitors must place top-five in their heat or run the next two fastest times. From the gun, Wheeler got right off the line and positioned herself in the middle of the lead group. As the race progressed, the pace began to pick up and Wheeler maintained her position in the top-seven. With nine laps to go, Wheeler was clipped, and her shoe fell off. She would continue running trying to hold her position in the top-seven. With 400 meters to go, Wheeler was in sixth place gearing up for one final surge to place in the top-five. Running a 70 second last lap, Wheeler edged out the fifth competitor to earn an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in a time of 16:19.32. This will be Wheeler's second time qualifying for the championships.
