JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - The Providence College track team competed in the second day of the NCAA First Round on Friday, May 24 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Friar's lone competitor of the day was senior
Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. To qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championship finals in the steeplechase competitors must place top-three in their heat or run the next three fastest times.
Ilarda, the first overall seed in the East Preliminary Meet, went immediately to the front from the gun and pushed a strong pace. She would lead the pack with one other competitor for the first half of the race. With 1,000 to go, Ilarda made a surge to gap the field and never looked back. She would go on to take the victory in a time of 9:59.32, automatically qualifying her for the final round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas on June 5-8. This will be Ilarda's third time qualifying for the championships in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
The Friars finish up the NCAA First Round on Saturday, May 25.
Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) and Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) will start off the day for the Friars in the finals of the 1,500 meters at 6:30p.m. They will be followed by
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) and Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) in the finals of the 5,000 meters, which begins at 8:05p.m.
