JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - The Providence College track team competed in the first day of the NCAA First Round on Thursday, May 23 in Jacksonville, Fla. Senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va) and graduate student Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) ran in the preliminary heats of the 1,500 meters and qualified for the finals on Saturday, May 25. To qualify for the finals, runners must place in the top-five in their heat or run the next four fastest times.
Paladino started off the day for the Friars in the second heat of the 1,500 prelims. Paladino positioned herself in the top-five from the gun. As the race progressed, a Notre Dame athlete took the lead and began to form a gap from the rest of the pack. Paladino settled in second and took charge of the chase pack. With 400 meters to go, Paladino made surge to close the gap and catch the leader. Paladino would go on to win the prelim in a time of 4:16.78 and auto-qualify for the finals. Paladino's time marked the fastest of the day.
Wyman raced in the first heat of the prelims and positioned himself towards the back of the field. He would remain in the back for the majority of the race, waiting for the break to happen. As the race progressed, Wyman kept moving through the field. With 200 meters to go, Wyman positioned himself in the top-six finishing with a strong kick. Wyman would go on to finish sixth in his heat in a time of 3:47.64. He would go on to qualify for the finals after posting the second fastest non-automatic time of the day.
