AMHERST, Mass. – The Providence College softball fell to the UMass Minutewomen, 5-4, in Amherst, Mass. on Tuesday, April 30. The Friars held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but could not hold on as UMass walked it off with a two-RBI single up the middle. Providence falls to 28-20 on the season heading into its final regular season series this weekend against Butler.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Friars scored four runs in the opening three innings but UMass scored three runs in the first inning and two runs in the seventh to prevail, 5-4.
- Providence gained a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but surrendered three runs in the bottom half of the inning to conclude the first with a 3-2 deficit.
Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) hit a two-RBI single to center which scored
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and
Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) to give Providence its two-run lead.
- The Minutewomen scored their three runs on two RBI singles and a fielders choice.
- Villani picked up her sixth RBI of the season to even the game at three runs apiece in the top of the second inning.
Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) scored on a single to shortstop as Villani beat out the throw.
- The Friars regained the lead in the top of the third inning on Tomaso's fifth home run of the year. Her home run was a solo shot to left field to give Providence a 4-3 lead.
- UMass loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before singling up the middle to for a walk-off two RBI single.
- Senior
Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) started the game in the circle, she went three innings while giving up three earned runs on four hits.
Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) pitched the final four innings, allowing two runs but zero earned. She was the pitcher of record and received the loss.
- The Friars saw four multi-hit efforts at the plate. Lee picked up three hits while Villani,
Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) and Tomaso each tallied two hits apiece.
- Tomaso notched three RBI on the day with a two RBI single and solo home run.
ON DECK
Providence will play in its final BIG EAST series of the season against Georgetown in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. The Friars will clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament by exceeding or matching Seton Hall's win total this weekend.
