Softball Set To Play UMass In Final Non-Conference Game

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will travel to Amherst, Mass. to play the UMass Minutewomen on Tuesday, April 30 at 4:00 p.m. Providence improved to 28-19 this season after sweeping the Butler Bulldogs this past weekend. The Friars have posted a 19-11 mark in non-conference play.
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars are currently 28-19 overall this season with a 9-8 conference mark, placing them fourth in the BIG EAST. The top four teams in the BIG EAST regular season standings, based on winning percentage, will advance to the BIG EAST Softball Championship on May 10-11 in Chicago, Ill.  

Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) leads the team in batting average with a .406 mark. She has a team-high 58 hits and 12 stolen bases. Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) has tallied a team-high 28 RBI and five home runs. Portillo hit two home runs against Butler this weekend, including a solo home run on senior day in the sixth inning. The team has produced 27 home runs this season, with 12 separate players notching a home run.
 
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) improved to 17-6 this season after earning three wins against Butler this past weekend. Alvarez has pitched 13 complete games, six shutouts and has started 24 of her 27 appearances. She has 126 strike outs in 151.2 innings of work, giving up only 28 walks. McCune has pitched to a 3.26 ERA in her senior campaign. She holds a 7-8 record with nine starts in 24 appearances.
 
SCOUTING UMASS:
The Minutewomen have posted a 23-19 overall record and 11-4 mark in the Atlantic 10. Most recently, UMass took two of three games against Fordham University with an 11-6 win in game two followed by a 4-1 victory in the rubber game of the series.
 
UMass has six players hitting above .300 this season with at least 75 at-bats. Katilyn Stavinoha leads the team with a .387 batting average while starting all 42 games. She has totaled 55 hits, five home runs and 36 RBI. Kaycee Carbone is another bat to look out for in the lineup, she has four home runs and 25 RBI. Three players have combined to hit the team's 11 home runs this season.
 
Kiara Oliver has started 18 games, pitching to an 8-11 overall record. She has a team-low 2.30 ERA with two shutouts on the season. Quinn Breidenbach and Kenadee Rausch have each started 12 games. Breidenbach holds a 3.07 ERA compared to Rausch's 3.74 ERA.
 
ON DECK:
The Friars will travel to Washington, D.C. to play in their final BIG EAST series of the season against Georgetown on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. Providence has to exceed or match Seton Hall's win total this weekend to clinch a playoff berth in the BIG EAST Tournament.
