Softball Sweeps Double Header Against Butler

Daniela Alvarez picked up two wins on the day to improves to 16-6 on the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team took two games in a double header on Saturday, April 27 on Glay Field against the Butler Bulldogs. The Friars led throughout the game in game one to earn an 8-0 run rule win. Providence battled in game two for a 2-1 win to improve Providence's BIG EAST record to 8-8 after today.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence led wire-to-wire to earn an 8-0 run rule victory over the Bulldogs in game one of the double header.
- Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) hit her fourth home run of the season to give Providence its first lead of the of day in the second inning, 1-0. The home run marked back-to-back games with Compton hitting a solo shot.
- The Friars used a seven-run fourth inning to extend their lead to 8-0. Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) hit her second home run of the season on a two-run blast over the left field fence to open the inning. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.). Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.) then pinch hit for Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) and hit a two-RBI single off the right field fence to build a 6-0 advantage. Compton picked up her second and third RBI of the game after singling up the middle to score Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Tate.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched five innings allowing no runs to complete the victory. She struck out seven batters while walking just one.
- Compton went 2-2 at the plate including three RBI, Tate and San Antonio each knocked in two RBI in game one.
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence scored two runs in the bottom of the first which proved to be the difference as they came out on top, 2-1.
- Lee started off the game by getting in scoring position with a lead-off double in the bottom of the first inning. Portillo then hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to give Providence an early 2-0 lead.
- Portillo's home run remained the difference until Butler led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field off the bat of Madi Christiansen to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
- Alvarez started her second game of the day and pitched four innings, she struck out five batters allowing zero earned runs. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) relieved Alvarez to pitch the final three innings. She allowed a lead-off home run to her first batter but settled in to earn the save. McCune struck out five batters in three innings of work.
 
ON DECK:
Providence will face Butler tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for senior day.
