Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Seton Hall

Providence is now 25-17 overall with a 6-7 BIG EAST record.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team split its doubleheader with the Seton Hall Pirates on Thursday, April 18 in Providence, R.I. The Friars won game one by stranding runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning to prevail, 2-0. Providence fell in game two, 4-3, after a strong pitching performance by the Pirates. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) increased her hitting streak to 17 games after singling in her final at-bat of the day against the Pirates.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Friars scored first to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, 1-0 . Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) hit a RBI single to left field to score Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.). Lee tallied her 14th RBI of the season.
- Providence added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after a one out RBI single from Allison Abbatielllo (North Salem, N.Y.) to score Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.), giving the Friars a 2-0 advantage.
 - Daniela Alverez (Santa Ana, Calif.) earned the start in the circle. She was the pitcher of record and picked up her 14th win and 100th strikeout of the season. Alverez pitched seven innings only allowing four hits and zero runs.
- Providence tallied four hits in the game and one error.
- The Friars clinched their 25th win of the season making it Providence's most wins since 2008.
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence lost its first game at home this season after falling to Seton Hall, 4-3, in the second game of the doubleheader.
- Hailey Arteaga put the Pirates on the board first in the top of the first inning with a RBI double to score Janae Barracato (1-0). Arteaga scored on a suicide squeeze from Darby Pandolfo to extend the lead to 2-0.
- The Friars cut the lead to one (2-1) with a RBI double from Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) to score Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) in the bottom of the second.
- Molly McGarry (Edina, Minn.) tied the game for Providence on a fielder's choice to score Compton (2-2).
- The Friars tacked on another run to take the lead, 3-2, with a RBI double to center field from Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) to score McGarry in the bottom of the second.
- The Pirates had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the sixth when Janae Barracato hit a two run double to score Ragen Reddick and Kianna Tate to take back the lead, 4-3.
- Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) got the start in the circle for the Friars and pitched all 7 innings. McCune tallied six strikeouts and 10 hits.

ON DECK:
Providence returns to the field on Saturday, April 20 for the rubber match of the series against Seton Hall. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
