PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team improved to 7-0 at home this season after defeating the Harvard Crimson, 7-5, on Tuesday, April 16 on Glay Field. Providence trailed by four runs entering the fourth inning before
Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.),
Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) and
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) combined to hit four home runs in the final four innings. Portillo capped off the comeback with a walk-off two-run blast to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence trailed 4-0 entering the fourth inning but used four home runs in the latter half of the game to defeat the Crimson, 7-5.
- Freshman Megan Welsh gave the Crimson a three-run lead, 3-0, with a three-run big fly to right center field in the top of the second inning. Harvard added one more run in the top of the third inning with an RBI single off the bat of Erin Lockhart to take a 4-0 advantage.
- Tomaso continued her impressive freshman campaign, hitting her team-high fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. The solo shot brought Providence within three, 4-1, entering the top of the fifth inning.
- The Friars put up four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Martin opened the scoring with a solo home run to left field for her second home run of the season.
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) and
Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) reached base safely before Portillo gave Providence its first lead of the game, 5-4, with a three-run home run to left center field.
- Harvard found an answer in the top of the seventh, Welsh hit her second home run of the game, this time tying the game at 5-5.
- Portillo sent the Friars home with the win after hitting her second home run of the game, this time over the center field fence. Portillo tallied five RBI on the day which put her at 25 on the season, a team-high.

Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) started her second game of the season and pitched the opening three innings. Murphy allowed five hits over three innings and gave up four earned runs.
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) entered to pitch the top of the fourth inning. She pitched the final four innings of one-hit ball, striking out four batters in the process. Alvarez improved to 13-6 this season with the win.
