Softball Drops Two Games At DePaul

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Providence College softball team dropped two games to the DePaul Blue Demons on Saturday, April 13 in Chicago, Ill. The Friars dropped game one in six innings, 8-0, after facing an early deficit and failing to come back. Providence gained a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game in the doubleheader, but DePaul fought back to earn an 8-2 win. Providence falls to 23-16 overall and 5-6 in BIG EAST action.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
-DePaul gained an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and led throughout to earn an 8-0 win over Providence in game one of the double header.
- The Blue Demons hit two solo home runs in the bottom half of the first inning to build their two-run advantage.
- DePaul tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the pressure on Providence late in the game.
- Jessica Cothern knocked in a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to seal DePaul's 8-0 win in six innings.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) started in the circle, she pitched 4.1 innings and gave up six earned runs. Alvarez struck out three batters in the game. Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) relieved Alvarez and pitched the rest of the game, she went one inning and let up one earned run.
- Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) picked up Providence's lone hits, they each hit a double.
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence led after the first inning, 2-0, but failed to hold onto the lead as they fell in game two, 8-2.
- Lee got in scoring position to open the game with a double to left field, Villani followed by reaching base on an error. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) brought in Lee and Villani with a single to right field to take a 2-0 lead. Compton notched her sixth and seventh RBI of the season with the single.
- The Blue Demons tied the game in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run blast. They gained their first lead of the afternoon with their second home run of the inning on a solo shot to take a 3-2 lead.
- DePaul added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to build a 6-2 advantage. The Blue Demons hit a two-run home run in the bottom half of the sixth inning to increase their lead to six, 8-2. Providence failed to score in the latter half of the game.
- Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) started in the circle and pitched the first four innings. She was pitcher of record and gave up six earned runs on nine hits. Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) pitched the final two innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
- Lee increased her hitting streak to 14 straight games with a 2-4 effort at the plate.
 
ON DECK:
The series finale against DePaul on Sunday, April 14 was cancelled due to weather. Providence will return home to match up against Harvard on Tuesday, April 16.
