NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Providence College softball team defeated the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, 5-4, on Saturday, April 11 in New Britain, Conn. The game was a back-and-forth affair before
Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) brought in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the sixth inning, to score
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.). Providence improved to 23-14 on the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
-In a game that saw three ties, the Friars scored the winning run in the top of the sixth inning to prevail over the Blue Devils, 5-4.
- The first inning remained scoreless before Providence entered the scoring column in the top of the second inning. Lee notched her 13
th RBI of the season after singling to plate
Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.).
- Central Connecticut knotted the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the first inning.
- The Friars regained the lead on
Taylor Stephen's (Monarch Beach, Calif.) first home run of the season in the top of the third inning. Stephen brought in Tomaso on her two-run blast.
- The Blue Devils plated two in the bottom half of the third inning to tie the game at 3-3. Central Connecticut scored one run on a wild pitch before scoring its second run of the inning on a fielder's choice.
- The fourth inning saw each team score one run to keep the game tied, this time at four runs apiece.
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) knocked in Lee with a sacrifice fly to center field for her team-high 20
th RBI of the season. The Blue Devils tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with another ground ball for a fielder's choice.
- Tomaso brought in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Lee on third base, Tomaso drove a ball to center field that scored Lee on the sacrifice fly for her 18
th RBI of the season.

Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) earned the start in the circle, going four innings while giving up three earned runs. Trinidad struck out two batters in the game.
Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) made her ninth appearance of the season when she relieved Trindad, Murphy gave up zero earned runs and just two hits. She was the pitcher of record and picked up her first career win.
- Lee and
Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) combined for six hits at the top of lineup, three apiece.

Providence returns to conference play this weekend against DePaul University with a double header on Saturday, April 13 starting at 12:00 p.m. before wrapping up the series on Sunday, April 14 at 12:00 p.m.
