Men’s and Women’s Track And Field Competes In Day One Of The Raleigh Relays

The Friars will be back tomorrow, March 30, for the final day of the Relays.

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams competed on the first day of Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State on Friday, March 29. Providence finished the day with 16 Friars running personal bests. 
 
The Friars had a strong showing in the men's 1,500 meters with three runners finishing in the top-15 overall. Graduate student Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) was the first Friar across the line in a time of 3:45.17, placing fifth overall. This a two second personal best for Wyman. His time has qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the past. Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and Michael O'Leary (Saint James, N.Y.) were not far behind Wyman finishing 11th (3:46.64) and 14th (3:47.25) overall. White and O'Leary both set new personal bests.
 
Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand), Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) were the highlights for the Friars in the men's 5,000 meters. Karamanolis competed in the sixth heat of the 5,000 meters and was the fastest Friar to cross the line in this event. Karamanolis would run a smart race, positioning himself in the back of the pack early in the race. As the race progressed, Karamanolis moved through the field to place himself in the top pack with 1,000 meters to go. Karamanolis would finish strong on the final lap to finish sixth in his heat in a time of 14:07.55. This was a 11 second personal best for Karamanolis. His time has qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the past. Rocha and Gallagher would also have strong showings in their respective heats of the 5,000 meters. Rocha, running in heat five, placed 10thin a time of 14:22.17. This is a seven second personal best for Rocha. Gallagher, running in heat four, placed eighth in a time of 14:28.28. This is also a personal best for the Gallagher. 
 
Junior Ian Steller (Providence, R.I.) was the first Friar to cross the line in the men's 10,000 meters. Steller ran a time of 30:16.13, finishing 13thin his respective heat. This was a personal best for Steller.

Providence will be back in action for day two of Raleigh Relays today, Saturday, March 30. The first event for the Friars' begins at 10:30 a.m.
