Softball Drops BIG EAST Opener To St. John’s, 5-1

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence College softball team dropped its season opener to St. John's, 5-1, on Saturday, March 23 in Queens, N.Y. The Friars fell to 14-11 overall and snapped their four-game winning streak.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- St. John's gained an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and Providence failed to even the game throughout, falling 5-1.
- The Red Storm struck early, scoring one run on an RBI double to left field to end the first inning with a 1-0 lead.
- St. John's increased their lead to 4-0 after the fourth inning, they started the inning with a solo home run followed by an RBI double. The team capped off the inning plating one on a fielding error by Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.).
- The Friars' lone run of the game came on an RBI single off the bat of Nunez in the bottom of the fourth inning. Providence had the bases loaded prior to Nunez's single but could not find a timely hit.
- The Red Storm added one run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI triple to seal the 5-1 victory.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) started in the circle and pitched all six innings, she was the pitcher of record after giving up five earned runs and nine hits. Alvarez struck out three.
- Providence compiled five hits in the game, Nunez picked up the team's only multi-hit game (two). Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.), Hadley Tate (Yartmouthport, Mass.) and Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) each added a hit.

Providence will wrap up its three-game series with St. John's tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. in Queens, N.Y.
