Softball Splits Doubleheader Against St. John’s

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence College softball team split games on Sunday, March 24 against St. John's in Queens, N.Y. The Friars earned their first BIG EAST win of the season in game one, 10-6, but dropped game two in extra innings, 6-5.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence was held scoreless in the first three innings before breaking out and scoring 10 in the final four innings to earn its 10-6 victory.
- The gamed stayed scoreless until Providence chalked up five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Molly McGarry (Edina, Minn.) notched her first extra base hit of the season in style, hitting a solo home run over the center field fence. Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) hit a triple the next at-bat, before she scored on a fielding error hit by Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.). The Friars loaded the bases before Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) cleared all base runners, hitting a three RBI double to left field. Providence led 5-0 after the top of the fourth.
- St. John's answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. McCune did not allow a hit in the first three innings until the Red Storm picked up four in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Storm brought the game within two, 5-3, after a three-run blast with one out in the inning. They added a run on an RBI double to head to the fifth inning with Providence leading 5-4.
- The Friars added two insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning. Nunez hit an RBI double to left center field before Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) hit an RBI single for her third hit of the game. Providence held a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
- Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) recorded Providence's 11th hit of the game with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 8-4.
- Providence sealed its 10-6 win in the top of the seventh inning after plating two. McCune hit an RBI triple to right field followed by a sac fly off the bat of San Antonio. The Red Storm scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but could not make the comeback.
- McCune pitched 3.1 innings, giving up four hits and four earned runs. She was the pitcher of record and earned the win. Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) came into relief and pitched 3.2 innings, she allowed two earned runs while striking out three. 

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence fought back from a five-run deficit but fell in extra innings to the Red Storm, 6-5.
- St. John's built a five-run advantage after hitting four home runs in the opening three innings, four of which were solo home runs.
- Freshman Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) got the Friars on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run to center field. The home run marked her second of the season.
- Providence used a four-run top of the seventh inning to push the game to extra innings. Nunez started the comeback with her second home run of the season on a solo home run to center field. Tomaso hit an RBI single for her second RBI of the game. McCune topped off the inning with a double to right center that plates Tomaso and Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.).
- Neither team could capitalize until the 10th inning when the Red Storm walked it off on an RBI single to left field.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) started the game in the circle, pitching 2.2 innings while allowing five earned runs. McCune pitched the final 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits. She struck out nine and was the pitcher of record.

Providence will host Bryant on Tuesday, March 26 at Glay Field. The game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
