Providence Travels To St. John’s To Open BIG EAST Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will travel to Queens, N.Y. to play St. John's in its BIG EAST opener on Saturday, March 23 at 12:00 p.m. The Friars will wrap up the three game series on Sunday, March 24 at with a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
Providence improved to 14-10 after picking up a 1-0 victory on Wednesday, March 20 at Boston College. The Friars enter conference play eclipsing their win total from last season (13) with the win at Boston College. The Friars have been dominant in their previous four games, outscoring their opponents, 28-2, in the victories.
 
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) has mirrored her success last season, posting a .406 batting average through 24 games, proving to rank second in the BIG EAST. Lee has a team-high 26 hits and ranks second in RBI with 11. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.), Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) and Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.) are the other Friars hitting above .300. Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) has heated up as of late, in the team's home opener versus Sacred Heart on March 19, Portillo hit her first home run of the season and tallied four RBI in the third inning alone.
 
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) have handled the workload in the circle, Alvarez holds a 1.40 ERA, ranking first in the BIG EAST, while McCune has recorded a 2.10 ERA, ranking second behind Alvarez in the conference. As a team through non-conference play, Providence has topped BIG EAST foes in team ERA (2.07).
 
SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S:
The Red Storm enter BIG EAST play with an 11-13 overall record. Most recently, the team went 3-1 in the St. John's Invitational, defeating Wagner and Holy Cross (twice) while losing to Hofstra, 9-3.
 
It will be a battle of strengths this weekend in New York, St. John's offense sits first in the BIG EAST in batting average (.286), slugging percentage (.440) and on base percentage (.385). The pitching staff will have to keep tabs on Marissa Rizzi, currently first in the conference in batting average (.448), home runs (eight), slugging percentage (.896) and on base percentage (.526).
 
Madison Morris and Angela Saric have started 23 of the teams 24 games to start the season. Morris has the only winning record on the team, posting a 7-5 record. She has pitched seven complete games and has a 3.59 ERA in a team-high 87.2 innings pitched. Saric enters the weekend with a 4.99 ERA and 4-5 record.

Providence will return home to play against Bryant University on Tuesday, March 26 at 3:00 p.m.
