PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team won their fourth-straight game defeating Boston College, 1-0, on Wednesday, March 20 in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched her seventh complete game of the season, picking up her third shutout.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the Friars put one on the board, closing out the game without allowing a run to earn the 1-0 victory.
- Providence scored on a fielder's choice hit by
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) in the top of the six inning. The bases were loaded when Nunez grounded a ball to third base, Boston College got the out at home but encountered a throwing error on the play to allow
Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) to round third base and score.
- The Friars were a threat on the base paths, tallying three steals on the day.
Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas),
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Compton each stole bases safely.
- Alvarez improved to 8-3 on the season in a dominant fashion. She let up only one hit while striking out 11. Her 11 strikeouts marked a career-high.
- Villani and Compton each recorded two hits while
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.), Portillo,
Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) and
Hadley Tate each tallied one hit apiece.
- Providence improves to 14-10 heading into conference play and eclipsed last seasons win total with their victory over Boston College.
ON DECK
Providence will travel to Jamaica, N.Y. to take on St. John's in it's BIG EAST opener. The Friars will play a double header on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. followed by one game on Sunday, March 24 at 12:00 p.m. to wrap up the series.
