PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team defeated the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 12-1, on Tuesday, March 19 at Glay Field in five inning. With the win, the Friars are now 13-10 on the season.
HIGHLIGHTS:
-Sacred Heart scored first in the top of the third. Mangiameli reached third on a triple with one out then scored on a passed ball after
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) picked up a put out.
-In the bottom of the third,
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif) singled up the middle before a wild pitch during
Vanessa Portillo's (Chatsworth, Calif.) at bat allowed Lee to steal second. Portillo hit a home run over the center field fence to score Lee and take the lead 2-1. This was Portillo's first home run of the season and 10
th RBI.

Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) loaded the bases with a walk in the bottom of the third. Allison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) hit a single to score
Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) to make it 2-1.
Mackensie Compton (Langehorne, Pa.) then scored due to fielder's choice, extending the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third.
- The bases still were loaded in the bottom of the third when Lee was hit by a pitch, walking in a run to take a 5-1 lead. Portillo lined a single up the middle to tally her third and fourth RBI of the inning, plating
Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) and Abbatiello to score two more runs (7-1).
-McCune hit a double to score Lee and Portillo in the bottom of the third extending the lead to 9-1.
- The Friars tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth for the 12-1 final.
- Game two was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions.
ON DECK:
Providence will travel to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts to match up against the Boston College Eagles on Wednesday, March 20.
