Softball Routs Lafayette In USF-Series, 7-1

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Providence College softball team wrapped up play in Clearwater, Fla., on their spring break trip, with a 7-1 victory over the Lafayette Leopards on Sunday, March 17 in the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational. Providence improves to 12-10 overall on the season before returning to Providence for its home opener.
 
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Each team tallied one run in the second inning before Providence broke the game open, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead its 7-1 victory over Lafayette.
- Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) picked up her second RBI of the season, bringing in Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) with a single to center field (1-0).
- Lafayette answered with an RBI single in the second inning, but Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) worked out of trouble to end the second inning tied at 1-1.
- Baserunning opportunities opened the six-run fourth inning, Abbatiello stole second allowing Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) to score on a throwing error. Abbatiello then rounded the bases to score on a passed ball and increase the lead to 3-1.
- The Friars then used two home runs to cap off the inning, each a two-run home run. Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.) tallied the first on her team-high third home run of the season, homering to left field to bring in Lauren Nuńez (Rowland Heights, Calif.). Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) reached base safely before Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) hit her first collegiate home run to build a 7-1 advantage.
- Providence pitched by committee with three Friars entering the circle. Trinidad earned the start and pitched three innings, giving up one earned run on four hits. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) followed with three strong innings, giving up one hit while striking out three. She was the pitcher of record and improved to 4-3 on the season. Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) came in to pitch the seventh, striking out one batter and surrendering zero hits.
- Tomaso (two), Compton (three) and Abbatiello (two) each recorded multi-hit games with Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.), Tate and Portillo notching one hit apiece.

The Friars return to Providence, R.I. for their home opener on Tuesday, March 19 at 2:30 p.m. against Sacred Heart.
