Providence Track and Field Competes In The Final Day Of The UCF Black And Gold Challenge

The Friars came out with two individual winners on the second day of competition.

ORLANDO, FLA. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field team competed on the final day of the UCF Black and Gold Challenge at the University of Central Florida on Friday, March 16. The Friars had 11 athletes place in the top-five in their respective events. 
 
Sophomore Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) had a solid performance in the men's 800 meter race. Carleo positioned himself in the lead pack for the first 400 meters. As the race strung out on the final lap, Carleo made a surge to hang on to the top three. Carleo would go on to finish fourth overall in a time of 1:52.44. 
 
Providence had a strong showing in the men's 3,000 meter race finishing one through five. From the gun, a pack of five Friars took the lead and kept a solid pace. As the race progressed, sophomore Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and senior Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) went on to gap the field with 1,000 meters to go. The duo would battle it out till the finish, finishing one and two overall. Rocha would finish first in a time of 8:26.12 and Karamanolis second in 8:26.17. Ian Russ (East Aurora, N.Y.), Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and Sean Meehan (East Greenwich, R.I.) were not far behind the top two finishers. Russ would finish third (8:39.53), Gallagher fourth (8:42.27) and Meehan fifth (8:47.51).
 
The men's 4x400 meter relay team also placed top-five in their race. The team of Jared Grossi (Warwick, R.I.), Ryan Jendzejec (Chappaqua, N.Y.), Daniel Rooney (Rochester, N.Y.) and Joseph Hurton (Wakefield, Mass.) finished first in their respective heat in a time of (3:24.58). The team would go on to finish fourth overall in the event. 
 
Junior Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) was the highlight of the day on the women's team in the 3,000 meters. Wheeler took the race from the gun and never looked back. She kept a strong pace and expanded her lead as the race progressed. Wheeler would take the victory in a time of 9:39.38.

Providence will travel next to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Raleigh Relays on March 29-30.
