CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Providence College softball team split two games on day two of the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational on Saturday, March 16 in Clearwater, Fla. The Friars fell in game one to Colgate, 1-0, before defeating Florida A&M by the mercy rule, 8-0, in five innings.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- A pitcher's duel in game one led Colgate over Providence, 1-0.
- The game remained scoreless until the Raiders put up one run in the top of the sixth inning. Rebecca Johnson attempted a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error by Nuńez, the error allowed Madison Aston to cross the plate.
- Providence tallied two hits in the game coming from the top of the lineup,
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) recorded the teams only hits.

Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and zero earned runs. She tallied two strikeouts. McCune now holds a 3-3 record on the season.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence earned an 8-0 win, in five innings, due to the mercy rule against Florida A&M in game two.
- The Friars put up a six spot in the bottom of the first inning to put the Rattlers in an early hole. Portillo opened the scoring, hitting a single up the middle to score
Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas).
Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) followed with another RBI single up the middle to increase the lead to 2-0 after Lee crossed the plate.
Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) picked up Providence's first extra base hit of the day, plating
Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) and Portillo to build a 4-0 advantage. The last two runs came after
Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) hit an RBI single and Nuńez grounded into a fielder's choice to score Compton. Providence led 6-0 at the end of the first.
- Martin continued her solid day at the plate with a solo home run in in the bottom of the third inning to increase the lead to 7-0.
- Before earning the mercy rule win after the top of the fifth, Portillo doubled down the left field line to score Nuńez in the bottom of the fourth and make it an 8-0 game.

Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) built on her team leading ERA (1.56), pitching all five innings giving up just one hit and tallying three strikeouts.
- Providence moves to 11-10 overall on the season.
