Softball Falls To Columbia And Towson On Day One Of USF-Series

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Providence College softball team dropped its first two games in the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational on Friday, March 15 in Clearwater, Fla. The Friars fell in game one in extra innings to Columbia, 7-3, followed by a 6-5 loss to Towson University to conclude day one.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Friars battled to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh before falling in extra innings to Columbia, 7-3.
- Columbia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after an RBI single.
- Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.) knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, Tate singled to right center to score Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.).
- The Lions regained their one-run advantage in the top of the sixth inning after scoring on a throwing error.
- Providence trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) forced extra innings with a single down the left field line to score Abbatiello.
- Each team tallied a run in the eighth inning to head to the ninth with a 3-3 game. Columbia scored on a sac fly while Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) hit a single in the bottom of the eighth to plate Mairead O'Sullivan (Grafton, Mass.).
- Columbia put up four runs in the top of the ninth to earn its 7-3 win.
- Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) started in the circle, pitching five innings and giving up two earned runs. She was the pitcher of record and fell to 1-2 on the season. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) relieved Trinidad to pitch the final four innings. McCune gave up one earned run in four innings of work.
- Villani, Tate, Portillo, McCune and Abbatiello each recorded hits as Molly McGarry picked up a multi-hit (two) game. 

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- The Friars held a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh before Towson plated three to earn its 6-5 win.
- Providence scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a scoreless pitchers duel. Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) earned the first RBI of the game with a two RBI single to plate Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) and Danielle Towle (Bridgewater, N.J.). Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) increased the lead to 4-0 to end the fifth after roping a two RBI double to left center field, scoring Nunez and Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.).
- The Tigers inched back to cut the deficit to one, 4-3, at the conclusion of the sixth inning. Towson scored one on an RBI single followed by a two RBI double.
- Lee tallied her second double of the day to score Nunez and add an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make it a 5-3 game.
- Towson scored three in the bottom of the seventh on two RBI doubles and an RBI single to win on a walk-off.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched 6.1 innings, giving up four earned runs while striking out four. She was the pitcher of record. Trinidad came into pitch in the bottom of the seventh giving up one hit.
- Villani, Compton, Martin, Flego and Nunez tallied one hit apiece. Lee recorded three hits in the team's efforts.

Providence will continue play in the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational against Colgate at 11:30 a.m. followed by Florida A&M at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16.
