JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – The Providence College softball team wrapped up day two in the River City Leadoff Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. on Saturday, Feb. 9 with a 4-3 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, followed by a 6-0 loss to the host Jacksonville University. Providence moves to 2-2 on the season.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence matched up with Georgia Tech in their first game of the day and prevailed by a score of 4-3. Freshman
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) walked off the Friars with a three-run home run for the first home run of her career.
- The Yellow Jackets broke the scoreless game in the top of third inning on a Bailee Zeitler RBI double, followed by a two-run home run from Tricia Awald. Only two of the runs were earned, due to an error to start the inning. Georgia Tech led 3-0 after the third inning.
- The Friars saved their scoring for the bottom of the seventh. The team put together a two-out rally started by
Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.). She singled to bring in
Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) to make the score 3-1. Nunez stepped up with a runner on second and third and blasted a home run over the left field fence to give Providence a 4-3 win.
- Tomaso and
Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) also recorded hits in the seventh inning.

Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) made her first collegiate start in the circle, pitching four innings and giving up two earned runs.
Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) and
Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) came in relief to pitch a scoreless three innings. McCune was the pitcher of record and earned the win.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- The Friars fell short in game two, falling to Jacksonville University, 6-0, despite matching the Dolphins 10 hits.
- Jacksonville entered the scoring column early in the first inning on a flurry of singles. In the bottom of the second, the Dolphins posted a three-spot with an RBI single and RBI double, followed by a fielding error to score the third run. Jacksonville led 4-0 after two innings.
- Providence threatened in the fifth inning with a runner on second and third with two outs, but Tomaso popped up to end the top of the fifth.
- The Dolphins added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth after Nydia Perez brought home a run with an RBI double followed by a two-run RBI single from Serena Quintana.

Miranda Trinidad started in the circle and was the pitcher of record.She pitched two innings and gave up three earned runs. McCune relieved Trinidad and gave up two earned, while Murphy pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas),
Molly McGarry (Edina, Minn.) and
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) each tallied multiple hits at the top of the lineup, while Nunez,
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Tomaso each recorded a hit.

Providence will wrap up play in the River City Leadoff Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. tomorrow, Feb. 10 when it matches up against UMass-Lowell at 10:00 a.m.
