PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team opens up its 2019 campaign at Jacksonville University to play in the River City Leadoff in Jacksonville, Fla. on Feb. 8-10. At the tournament, the Friars will take on University of Massachusetts Lowell, Georgia Tech and Jacksonville University.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars finished 2018 with an overall record of 13-32 and a record of 6-14 in the BIG EAST. Providence finished seventh overall in the BIG EAST in 2018.
The Friars return six of their nine starters from the 2018 season, including
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.). During the 2018 season, Lee batted .318 with 48 hits and 24 runs. Portillo batted .252 and tallied 30 hits with 17 RBI, a third of her hits were extra base knocks.
Providence will have to replace the loss of
Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) and
Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) in the starting lineup. Rurka was a 2018 All-BIG EAST Second Team member last season and led the team in hitting (.333). Veler led the team in home runs (9) and RBI (30).
Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) will look to lead the pitching staff. Trinidad posted the lowest ERA (3.36) on the staff last season, including 37 strikeouts and holding opposing hitters to just a .266 batting average.
SCOUTING UMASS LOWELL:
The UMass Lowell River Hawks finished last season with a record of 21-28 overall and 12-5 in the America East.
The River Hawks return Marianne Sparacia and Courtney Cashman in the starting nine, both of whom hit over .300 last season and recorded over 140 at bats. The duo combined for 97 hits and 50 runs during the 2018 season.
UMass Lowell will pitch by committee between Kaysee Talcik and Lovina Capria. Talcik recorded a 2.88 ERA in 23 starts last season compared to Capria's 2.92 ERA in 18 starts.
SCOUTING GEORGIA TECH:
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets finished last season with a record of 28-26 overall and 13-11 in the ACC.
Georgia Tech returns Cameron Stanford from last season, as a freshman she hit .292 and added 8 home runs. Katie Krzus will be another bat to look at for in the lineup, she tied for the team lead in home runs (9) last season and recorded a .284 average at the plate. Krzus led the team in RBI with 33.
Brooke Barfield and Naomi Dickerson will be in the circle for the Yellow Jackets. The duo combined for 18 starts last season. Barfield recorded a 3.02 ERA and held opponents to a .242 batting average. Dickerson tossed 65.2 innings for the team, posting a 3.94 ERA.
SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE:
The Jacksonville Dolphins wrapped up last season with a 27-29 overall record and 7-10 record in ASUN play.
The Dolphins will have to fill a lot of holes in their starting lineup. The team had six senior starters a year ago. Sophomore Hanna Roberts is their most notable returning position player, she hit .238 last season with 30 hits and 23 RBI.
Alyssa Bilodeau will start for the Dolphins in the circle. Last season she recorded a 16-13 overall record in 190 innings. She posted a 2.32 ERA and recorded 115 strikeouts.
ON DECK:
The Friars will return to Florida on Feb. 15 for the D9 Citrus Blossom Tournament in Orlando, Fla. Providence will take on Saint Joseph's, Bethune-Cookman, Stetson, Kansas and UMass over the course of Feb. 15-17.
