Softball Splits Doubleheader In Day One Of River City Leadoff

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – The Providence College softball team split their doubleheader in day one of the River City Leadoff Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla. on Friday, Feb. 8. The Friars fell to UMass-Lowell in game one by a score of 7-4. Providence defeated Georgia Tech, 4-3, in their second game courtesy of a Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.) walk-off single.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence could not hold on in game one against UMass-Lowell as the River Hawks picked up a 7-4 win.
- UMass-Lowell opened the game scoring three runs in the first inning on two walks and a hit by pitch.
- Providence answered putting up a three spot of their own in the third inning. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) singled through the left side in which Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) and Danielle Towle (Bridgewater, N.J.) scored on a throwing error.
- The Friars took the lead just two innings later in the fifth. Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) plated Villani after doubling down the left field line to hand Providence a 4-3 lead.
- The River Hawks regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. UMass-Lowell scored four in the bottom of the fifth which proved to be the final runs of the game to give the River Hawks a 7-4 win.
- Villani had a stellar NCAA debut, going 2-3 at the plate and scoring two runs. Senior Emma Lee picked up three hits behind Villani, while Taylor Stephen (Monarch Beach, Calif.) went 2-2 starting at first base.
- Senior Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) got the start and went 4.0 innings, giving up five runs. She was the pitcher of record.
- Sophomores Olivia Sprofera (Mahwah, N.J.) and Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) pitched in relief. Sprofera gave up two runs compared to Murphy's zero. 

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence took game two of their double header by defeating the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 4-3 in extra innings.
- Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) got the Friars on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Martin walked to earn her first RBI of the season that plated Lee. Stephen singled through the right side to bring in the Friars second run of the inning and give them a 2-0 lead.
- Tomaso singled through the right side in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Friars lead to 3-0. The single marked her first collegiate hit and it brought in her first collegiate RBI.
- Georgia Tech answered in the top of the sixth with one out in the inning. Drew Puckett hit a double to left center that brought in two to cut the Friar lead to 3-2. Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) came in for her NCAA debut and got out of a based loaded jam by striking out Crosby Huckabay and getting Bailee Zeitler to line out to third to end the inning.
- The Yellow Jackets were down to their final in the top of the seventh before Rebecca Prairie hit an RBI double to left center to knot the game at 3-3.
- Compton walked off the Friars in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single through left hole to give the Friars a 4-3 win.
- Portillo and Compton each tallied two hits while Stephen, Tomaso and Lee all recorded one.
- Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) pitched a strong 5.1 innings, giving up just five hits and two earned runs. Alvarez earned the win in her NCAA debut with 2.2 innings pitched and one earned run.

The Friars will have a rematch with Georgia Tech on Feb. 9 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a game against the host Jacksonville University at 3:30 p.m. after the conclusion of game one.
