Providence Track’s Millie Paladino Crowned BIG EAST 3,000 Meter Champion On The Final Day Of The BIG EAST Indoor Championships

The Friars competed in the final day of the BIG EAST Championships in Geneva, Ohio on Feb. 23.

GENEVA, OHIO - The Providence College men's and women's track & field teams raced on the second day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb, 23. The women's team finished in seventh place with 51 points while the men's team finished sixth with 33 points.
Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) was the premier performer for the Friars on the second day of the BIG EAST Championships. Paladino raced in the 3,000 meters after running a phenomenal 1200-meter (3:22) leg on the DMR team the night before. Paladino positioned herself in the top-three from the start. Paladino and teammate Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Western Australia), who won the 5,000 meters the night before, took control of the race and within one lap had broken away from the field with a single Villanova athlete. It was a battle between the three athletes until the last 200 meters, where Paladino would finish with a huge kick to take the victory. Paladino would finish first overall in a time of 9:24.29. This is back-to-back 3,000 meter titles for Paladino.
Ilarda and Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) also in the 3,000 meters would score some good points for the Friars. Ilarda would finish second overall behind Paladino, in a time of 9:26.34. Rome running a tough race would finish fourth overall in a time of 9:33.49.
Emma Fink (Western Springs, Ill.) made her BIG EAST high jump debut for the Friars. Fink would finish seventh overall, clearing a height of 1.55 meters.
The women's 4x800 meter relay team of Alexandra DeCicco (Sachem, N.Y.), Mackenzie Galvin (Woburn, Mass.), Dana Lowney (Easton, Mass.) and Dara Cuffe (Cornwall, N.Y.) would finish seventh in a time of 9:31.36.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Mariah O'Gara (Taunton, Mass.),Abigail Harrington(Wakefield, Mass.), Olivia Dickinson (South Burlington, Vt.) and Megan Stenberg (Lebanon, N.J.) finished seventh with a time of 4:10.76.
On the men's side the day started with Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) and Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) racing in the final of the men's mile. Wyman and White ran a smart race from the back of the pack. They would move up throughout the race and each have a strong closing lap. Wyman would finish fifth in a time of 4:04.94, running a one second personal record. White would finish sixth in a time of 4:06.08, running a four second personal record.
Daniel Rooney had a strong showing for the Friars in the 60 Meter Hurdle Finals. Rooney would place eighth overall in a time of 8.68, running a .02 personal record. Rooney's time is second all-time in school history.
Michael Bittner (Cranston, R.I.) took eighth place in the high jump with a height of 1.85 meters.
Marcus Karamanolis raced in the fast section of the 3,000 meters. Karamanolis positioned himself in the lead pack early on in the race. He would hold his position for the entire race, running a solid last 300 meters. Karamanolis would finish sixth in a time of 8:16.12. This was a four second personal record for Karamanolis.
The highlight for the men was the 4x800 meter relay team of Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.), Ryan Jendzejec (Chappaque, N.Y.), Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.), and Wyman. The Friars took the lead for the first two legs of the relay. On the third leg it was a battle between the Friars and the Wildcats. The team would finish with a silver medal in a time of 7:32.54, only four seconds off the school-record.
The 4x400 meter team of Joseph Hurton (Wakefield, Mass.), Jared Grossi (Warwick, R.I.), Rooney and Jendzejec finished seventh with a time of 3:25.60.
