Providence Track’s Brianna Ilarda Crowned BIG EAST 5,000 Meter Champion On Day One Of The BIG EAST Indoor Championships

The Friars competed in day one of the BIG EAST Championships in Geneva, Ohio on Feb. 22.

GENEVA, OHIO - The Providence College men's and women's track & field teams competed in the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 22. At the end of the first day of competition, the women are in sixth with 22 points and the men are in fifth with eleven points.
The highlight of the day for the Friars were Brianna Ilarda's (Perth, Western Australia) and Regan Rome's performances in the 5,000 meters. The duo got out well and sat comfortably within the pack for one mile. After a mile, Rome and Ilarda took control of the race and within one lap had broken away from the field with a single Villanova athlete. Ilarda and Rome kept pushing the pace opening a gap from the chase pack. With 800 meters to go, Ilarda surged leaving the race to her and the Villanova athlete. It was a battle between the two in the last 300 meters, but Ilarda would finish with a huge kick in the final stretch to take the victory in a time of 16:47.8. Rome was not far behind finishing third overall in a time of 17:07.1 This was Ilarda's first indoor 5,000 meter BIG EAST title and third overall.
The women featured a strong distance medley team of Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va), Olivia Dickinson (South Burlington, Vermont), Alexandra DeCicco (Sachem, Mass.), and Maria Coffin(Annapolis, Md.). Paladino led off the Friars' team with an impressive 3:22 1200-meter split. The team held onto the lead through the relay while Villanova and Butler worked their way back into the race. The Friars would finish third with a time of 11:46.9.
On the men's side, Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) and Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) both competed in the mile trials. Wyman would go on to finish second (4:14.31) in his heat and automatically qualify for the finals. White would place sixth (4:18.81) in his respective heat and qualify for the final on time. The finals of the men's mile will start at 12:10 p.m.
Sophomores Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) had strong showings in the 5,000 meters. Rocha positioned himself well in the lead pack for most of the race. The leaders began to push the pace with 1,000 meters to go creating a small gap from the rest of field. Rocha competed well in the chase pack over the final few laps and had a strong last 100 meters. Rocha would finish 5thin a time of 14:29.9, running a 24 second personal best. Rosas ran a smart race from the back of the chase pack. Rosas came through the field, picking off runners in the last 600 meters. Rosas would finish 8thin a time of 14:38.95, also setting a new personal best.
The men's DMR proved to be a back and forth affair between Providence, Villanova and Georgetown. The team of Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.), Jared Grossi (Warwick, R.I.), Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) and Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario) would come from behind to potion themselves in the lead pack going into the mile leg. It would come down to the final 300 meters between the three teams. The Friars would finish third with a time of 9:54.29.

The second day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships feature the finals of the mile, 3,000 meters, 60M Hurdles, High Jump, 4x400 meter relay, and 4x800 meter relay for Providence. Events begin at 11:20 a.m. tomorrow and will be live streamed on FOXSportsGo.
