Softball Drops Two Games On Day Two Of Diamond Nine Citrus Blossom Invitational

The Friars return tomorrow for their final game against UMASS Amherst at 11:30 a.m.

KISSIMMEE, FLA.– The Providence College softball team dropped two games on day two of the Diamond Nine Citrus Blossom Invitational in Kissimmee, Fla. on Feb. 16. The Friars fell to the Stetson Hatters in game one, 7-2, and were edged by the Kansas Jayhawks, 2-1, in game two. 
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence and Kansas were at a standstill for three innings.
- In the third, Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) hit a hard ball to shortstop to get on base for a single. 
-Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) took the walk allowing Abbatiello to advance to second.
-Emma Lee (Orange, Calif) doubled to right field allowing Abbatiello and Villani to score, making it 2-0 in the third.
- Stetson chalked up two runs in the fourth inning. Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) stepped in at the mound for Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.), who tallied three strikeouts on the day.   
-The Hatters increased their lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
-Providence trailed 6-2 and Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) stepped in for Murphy on the mound.
-Stetson scored one more run in the sixth inning from a single to right field.
- Leecontinued her success in the early part of the season, as she recorded two RBI and one hit at three at bats, to increase her average to .484 on the season.
- Villani, Abbatiello, Molly McGarry (Edina, Minn.) and Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) each added a hit.
- Trinidad pitched the most innings for the Friars (3.2) today. She allowed only eight hits and let up zero runs. 
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence was edged by Kansas in the second game of the day by a score of 2-1.
-Kansas took an early lead in the first inning scoring two runs off Daniela Alverez (Santa Ana, Calif).
- The game score remained the same until the Friars scored a run in the bottom of the third. Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J) stepped up to bat and was walked for her first RBI of the season, scoring Lee. Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) advanced to second and Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) advanced to third.
-In the bottom of the fourth, Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) singled to left field. Abbatiello singled out to first allowing Flego to advance to second. Villani got on base on an error allowing Flego to advance to third. Lee on deck and popped out to left field, while Flego went for home and got out.
- Martin tallied her first RBI of the season.
- Flego, Portillo and Villani all recorded a single against the Jayhawks.
-  Alverez pitched the Friars' second complete game of the day. Alvarez struck out two, giving up nine hits and two runs. She improves her ERA to 1.99.

ON DECK:
The Friars will play their final game of the invitational tomorrow morning, Feb. 16, against UMASS Amherst at 11:30 a.m.
