KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Providence College softball team opened its five-game slate in the Diamond Nine Citrus Blossom Invitational in Kissimmee, Fla. on Feb. 15. The Friars fell to Saint Joseph's in game one, 5-1, but bounced back and defeated Bethune-Cookman University, 6-1.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence could not climb out of a first inning 3-0 hole as they fell to Saint Joseph's, 5-1, in the first game of the day.
- Saint Joseph's chalked up three runs in the first inning. Caela Abadie hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Molly Kapala and Amanda Kulp. Taylor Marinelli followed with a ground ball to second that scored Sarah Ostaskewski on a fielding error.
- Providence plated one in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored
Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.). Providence trailed 3-1 at the end of the fourth.
- The Hawks increased their lead back to three in the top of the fifth inning. Stacey Mayer worked a walk with the bases loaded to plate Kirstin Cox and make it 4-1.
- Saint Joseph's padded its lead with a ground ball to third base in the top of the seventh inning, Jancarla Herrara scored on a fielding error to build a 5-1 advantage. Providence failed to rally in the bottom half of the inning.

Emma Lee continued her success in the early part of the season, as she went 2-4 at the plate to increase her average to .429 on the season.
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.),
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.), San Antonio and Compton each added a hit.

Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) pitched a complete game giving up six hits and one earned run. She was the pitcher of record.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence defeated Bethune-Cookman in its second game of the day by a score of 6-1.
- The game remained scoreless until the Friars broke the game open with a five-run top of the fourth inning.
Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) doubled to right field for her first RBI and first hit of the season, scoring Portillo.
Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.) worked a walk to score McCune and give the Friars a 2-0 lead.
Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) then cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to cap off the inning with a 5-0 cushion.
- Senior
Emma Lee pushed the lead to 6-0 in the top of the seventh after hitting her first career home run over the right field fence.
- McCune added one more double to her line in the game, while Nunez and
Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) each tallied singles.

Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched the Friars' second complete game of the day, this time earning the win. Alvarez struck out three, giving up only five hits. She improves to 3-0 on the season with a 1.98 ERA.
ON DECK
The Friars will play back-to-back games tomorrow morning, Feb. 16, with Stetson at 11:00 a.m. followed by Kansas beginning at 1:30 p.m.
